Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh is open to all young people aged 14-24.  It encourages team work and social interaction as well as making young people stand out when they apply for jobs or Further and Higher Education.

Achieving a Duke of Edinburgh Award opens doors to education and employment opportunities for any young person.

There are three Award levels:

  • Bronze - for those aged 14+ years
  • Silver - for those aged 15+ years
  • Gold - for those aged 16+ years

Webster's High School offers the Bronze and the Gold Level. If you aren’t 14 yet but are in the school year in which your peer group turn fourteen, you may be able to start a Bronze DofE programme - check with Mr Clark or Dr Milne (Technical and Geography).

Bronze:

Participating pupils chart their progress in the award using DofE.

The 3 sections, Volunteering, Skills and Physical are all planned and carried out by the pupils with approval of D of E leaders. There is very little input from the school in these sections and pupils are left to up-load evidence and assessor reports into eDofE.

The expedition however is completed with the support of school staff. Participants will meet once a week after the October holidays 4.00-5.00 . This time is used to plan and learn all the skills required on the expedition.

At the end of March we have a Friday afternoon to practice navigation skills around Kirriemuir,

In April we have an overnight practice expedition in one of the local glens and in May a qualifying expedition.

Gold Award

Pupils can sign up for Gold in the August of S5 with a view to completing by the end of S6.

Similar to Bronze in that Volunteering, Skills and Physical are very much owned by the pupil.

Pupils can choose to do a cycle, walking or a combination expedition.  Although some cycle training is necessary, training for the expedition is kept to a minimum as we rely on previous experience.

The practice expedition will take place in the August of S6 with the qualifier being at the end of S6.
