The Social Subject Curriculum Group consists of four departments: Geography, History, Modern Studies and RMPS

Broad General Education S1-S3

S1
In S1, pupils come to Social Subjects for 4 periods each week. We study units in Geography, History, Modern Studies and RMPS.

In S2, pupils study Geography and History for 2 periods per week and Modern Studies/RMPS for 1 period per week.

S3

Pupils will choose their subjects to study and specialise in Geography, History and/or Modern Studies. Pupils can opt for more than one Social Subject.

Senior Phase S4-S6

GEOGRAPHY

Courses: Geography (National 4 - Higher)

Geography opens up for learners the physical environment around them and the ways in which people interact with this environment. The purpose of Geography is to develop the learner’s understanding of our changing world and its human and physical processes. Opportunities for practical activities, including fieldwork, will be encouraged, including a trip to the Lake District. In the 21st century it is important that young people have a growing awareness of the impact of human activity upon the environment and scarce resources.  

Units are studied in 3 contexts: Physical Environments, Human Environments and Global Issues.

HISTORY

Courses: History (National 4 - Higher)

The purpose of the courses is to open up the world of the past for learners. History provides learners with insights into their own lives and of the society and the wider world in which they live. By examining the past, learners can better understand their own communities, their country and the wider world.

Units are studied in 3 contexts: Scottish, British and European and World.

MODERN STUDIES:

Courses: Modern Studies (National 4 - Higher)

Modern Studies develops your understanding of fundamental processes which underpin political and social life. This course encourages pupils to develop a greater understanding of the contemporary world and their place in it. They have opportunities to develop important attitudes such as respect for the values, beliefs and cultures of others; openness to new thinking and ideas; and a sense of responsibility and global citizenship.

Units are studied in 3 contexts: Democracy in Scotland and the UK, Social Issues in the UK, International Issues.
